Concede a point and add a but with zwar … aber . Weigh two sides with einerseits … andererseits . Build a proportional sentence with je … desto or je … umso , with the right word order in both halves. Sentences from this lesson, before the explanation. Read the German aloud; all of them come back below. German English Ich bin zwar nicht hässlich, aber auch nicht hübsch. [1] I'm not ugly, but I'm not pretty either. Ich habe kein Einkommen, weil ich keine Arbeit habe. [2] I don't have a salary because I don't have a job. Nur weil etwas teurer ist, muss es noch lange nicht besser sein. [3] Just because something is more expensive doesn't mean that it's better. Ich möchte ins Kino, allerdings habe ich keine Zeit. [4] I'd like to go to the cinema, but I don't have the time. Prerequisites : 2.30 — you need the coordinating conjunctions from 2.11 Grammar , the subordinate clause with the verb at the end from 2.12 Grammar , the comparative from 2.18 Grammar , and the contrastive nicht … sondern from 2.22 Grammar . Single conjunctions such as und , aber and weil link two clauses. Paired conjunctions do more: the first half announces the structure before the second half arrives. Sowohl tells the listener that a second item is coming; zwar warns that an objection follows. They are the scaffolding of an argument, and they will carry you into the connectors of 2.32 Grammar and into the argument volume of the next phase. English has most of them ( both … and , neither … nor , either … or ), so the meaning is easy. What needs care is German word order, which changes with some of the pairs. The pairs German English Word order sowohl … als auch both … and joins words or phrases; no effect on the verb nicht nur … sondern auch not only … but also no effect on the verb weder … noch neither … nor no effect on the verb; replaces nicht and kein entweder … oder either … or entweder in first position may be followed by the verb or by the subject zwar … aber admittedly … but; it is true that … but zwar is an adverb, usually in the middle field; it can also open the sentence einerseits … andererseits on the one hand … on the other hand adverbs: in first position they take the verb second je … desto / je … umso the … the je clause: verb last; desto clause: verb second In real sentences Both … and; not only … but also. German English Es ist sowohl gut als auch billig. [8] It is both good and cheap. Sie ist sowohl klug als auch schön. [9] She is both smart and beautiful. Er mag sowohl Musik als auch Sport. [10] He likes both music and sports. Es war nicht nur kalt, sondern auch nass. [11] It was not only cold, but also wet. Er mag nicht nur Musik, sondern auch Sport. [12] He not only likes music, but also sports. Neither … nor; either … or. German English Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld. [13] I have neither time nor money. Es ist weder hier noch dort. [14] It's neither here nor there. Entweder geht sie oder ich. [15] Either she goes, or I go! Entweder habe ich recht oder du. [16] Either I am right, or you are right. Entweder alle oder gar keiner. [17] Either all or none. Admittedly … but. German English Es ist zwar schön, aber nutzlos. [18] It's beautiful, but useless. Das ist zwar teurer, aber besser. German English Einerseits habe ich Angst vor dem Treffen; andererseits will ich es möglichst schnell hinter mich bringen. [21] On the one hand, I'm dreading the meeting; on the other, I want to get it over with as soon as possible. The more … the more. Look at the verb: at the end in the je half, second in the other half. German English Je eher, desto besser. [22] The sooner, the better. Je eher du gehst, desto besser. [23] The sooner you leave, the better. Je weniger er weiß, desto besser. [24] The less he knows, the better. Je mehr man weiß, umso weniger weiß man. [25] The more you know, the less you know. [27] The higher he rose in social rank, the more modest he became. How English does it The pairs match one to one. sowohl … als auch is both … and ; weder … noch is neither … nor ; entweder … oder is either … or ; nicht nur … sondern auch is not only … but also . Some of the shapes are related too: weder goes back to the same old word as whether (and neither ), and oder is related to or . But after not only is sondern , not aber . English has one but ; German has two. After a negative, when the second part replaces or extends the first, German uses sondern . You met this in nicht ich, sondern du ; the pair nicht nur … sondern auch follows the same rule. No double negative with weder … noch . English says I have neither time nor money , and German says Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld . As in English, the pair already contains the negation: do not add kein or nicht . A sentence such as Ich habe weder keine Zeit … is wrong. The more, the better : the German order. English keeps normal order in both halves: the more you know, the less you know . German treats the je half as a subordinate clause, with the verb at the end, and the desto half as a main clause with the comparative in first position, so the verb follows at once: Je mehr man weiß, umso weniger weiß man. The pattern is fixed: je + comparative … verb, desto + comparative + verb … Short
