Prerequisites : 9.2 — you need the reading 7.10 Reading , the nominal style from 2.30 Grammar , and the connectors from 2.32 Grammar . The summary is one of the most useful kinds of writing in German, and one of the most tested: in school, at university, in language exams and at work. German teachers have a clear idea of what a good summary is. It reports the content of a text objectively, in the present tense, in clearly fewer words than the original, and it does not add anything: no opinion, no quotation, no example that is not essential. Summarising is a skill of reading as much as of writing, and it is the best way to check that you have really understood a German text. Model A summary of the reading in 7.10 Reading , Das deutsche Schulsystem (about 800 words), in about 170 words. A summary reports what the text does, so it needs verbs other than sagen : beschreiben (to describe), erklären (to explain), betonen (to emphasise), feststellen (to state, to conclude), kritisieren (to criticise). Use them with dass and the verb at the end, or with an object: Der Text beschreibt die Noten. No quotation, no opinion. Do not copy sentences from the original; say the same thing in your own simpler words. Do not add what you think about the topic; if the text reports opinions, report them as opinions: Die einen kritisieren, dass … . In formal summaries, reported opinions are often given in Konjunktiv I , as in the press language of 2.26 Grammar ; at this level the indicative with dass is acceptable. The present tense. Even if the original tells a story in the past, a German summary is written in the present: Der Text erklärt … , Ein Schneider kommt in eine Stadt … . Earlier events within the summary go into the perfect. Watch it A video on the subject of this lesson. Press it to play (playback connects to YouTube).
