12.4 B2 self-assessment — Epoché
What this lesson reviews The whole of the fourth phase, measured against the level it was written for: B2 of the Common European Framework, the level at which a learner can follow complex texts on abstract topics, take part in a discussion with native speakers without strain on either side, and write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects. The lesson follows the structure of the best-known German examination at this level, the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, so that you can see where you stand. Sentences from this lesson, before the explanation. Read the German aloud; all of them come back below. German English Er hat das schwierige Problem leicht gelöst. [1] He solved the difficult problem easily. Dieses Problem kann anders gelöst werden. This is not an official examination, and your score is not a certificate. The examination has four modules, which can be taken separately: reading (about 65 minutes), listening (about 40 minutes), writing (about 75 minutes) and speaking (about 15 minutes). Each is marked out of 100 points and passed with 60. The tasks below are modelled on these modules but are shorter. If you want to take the real examination, check the current format on the website of the Goethe-Institut, since details change from time to time. Twenty sentences Twenty real sentences from the corpus, each with a structure that belongs to the B2 level: the passive with a modal, Konjunktiv I and II, lassen , extended attributes, and the conjunctions of the second and fourth phases. Ich hätte dort sein sollen. [16] I should've been there. Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, hätte ich geholfen. [17] If I had known, I would have helped. Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich nicht gekommen. Reading Read the text, written for this course, and decide whether each statement is true ( richtig ) or false ( falsch ). Allow yourself eight minutes. Dictation This part stands for the listening module. Play the audio of the twenty sentences above without looking at the page. After each sentence, pause and write down what you heard in German. Then compare. This is harder than the examination, which plays longer texts and asks questions about their content, but it tests the same skill: hearing the endings and the verbs at the end of the clause at natural speed. Read aloud Five of the twenty, chosen because their verbs stand at the end of long clauses. Read each twice, slowly and then at normal speed, without a pause before the final verbs. Das Problem muss noch gelöst werden. Statt selbst zu gehen, schickte ich einen Boten. Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich nicht gekommen. Es muss noch viel getan werden. Zusammenfassend schätzte der Vorstand das erreichte Ergebnis als unbefriedigend ein. Writing Two tasks, as in the examination. Allow 50 minutes for the first and 25 for the seco
