Sunday, 2nd November Today Jiho taught me the bus colours. In Seoul the colour of a bus is its job. We met at his flat in Mangwon. A blue bus took us straight down the main road towards the centre. Blue buses run the long routes on the big roads, he said. At Jongno we changed to a green bus. It turned into small streets every two or three minutes. Green buses connect the neighbourhoods to the subway and to the blue routes. Jiho calls them the last kilometre. Near Seoul Station we watched the red buses waiting in their own queue. Red means express: they go out to the new cities around Seoul on the fast roads, and they have more seats, because the ride is long. In the centre there are also a few yellow ones, which just go round the downtown on short loops. The numbers mean something too. On a blue bus, Jiho said, the first number is the zone where the route starts, and the second is the zone where it ends. The bus is a map, if you can read it. Tomorrow: one red bus to Bundang and back, only to see the seats.
