Suzhou in Frames: Two Slow Days in the Gardens A French garden shows you everything in the first minute: one long view from the gate. A classical Suzhou garden is built the other way. White walls cross it, so no point shows you the whole garden at once. You walk, and the garden comes to you as a row of pictures. The two days Day 1, morning: The Humble Administrator's Garden at 7.30, when the gates open. Stand at a moon gate — a round opening in a white wall. Inside the circle: one pine, one rock, water. That picture was planned about five hundred years ago. Day 1, afternoon: The Master of the Nets Garden, the smallest of the famous gardens. Small is the point: its windows sit exactly where a scene waits behind them. Day 2: Canglang Pavilion, the oldest of Suzhou's gardens. Walk the long corridor and look at the lattice windows in the wall, one by one. The patterns do not repeat. Details 980 yuan per person: one hotel night, breakfast, all garden tickets, one guide for eight guests. Train tickets not included. The walking is slow and flat. Dates: 18–19 April and 9–10 May.
