How a Lunch Box Travels in Mumbai Many Mumbai office workers eat hot food from home every day. About five thousand men, the dabbawalas, carry it. The system began in the 1890s. Late in the morning a dabbawala collects the metal box from each house and rides with many boxes to the station. They go by local train into the city, change hands, and reach the right desk before lunch. The lid has no written address. It has a painted code: colours and small marks for the station, the area and the building. The code works without reading. In the afternoon, every empty box travels home the same way.
