Eid in Amman: The Month That Moves — Epoche A1
Dear Sami, Eid Mubarak from Amman — we ate maamoul at grandfather's house today. Grandfather remembers Ramadan in winter, when the days were short and the fast was easy. And my father remembers Ramadan in August: long, hot days. The month moves. Grandfather told us why. The Muslim year follows the moon, and it is about eleven days shorter than the sun's year. So Ramadan starts about eleven days earlier every year. In about 33 years it goes through every season and comes back. Next year Eid comes eleven days earlier again.
