The Unseen Richness of Stillness: A Glimpse from Rural Train Windows — Epoche C1
The passenger at the window On a single-carriage branch line in rural Japan an elderly passenger sits for forty minutes without a phone, a book or a conversation, watching rice paddies, cedar plantations and the occasional distant ridge pass the window. That image is the subject of this essay, and my original response to it was to treat it as a rebuke: proof that a culture which prizes measurable output has mislaid something a slower one retained. The rebuke stands, but almost none of the reasons I first gave for it do. The research on what happens in an idle mind is now substantial, and much of it points the other way — unstructured stillness is, on average, neither pleasant nor good for people. What survives the evidence is narrower, stranger and more useful than the version I began with: it is not the emptiness of that passenger's forty minutes that restores anything. It is the window. The argument runs in four steps. First, what an idle brain is doing, which is not nothing. Second, the serious case against idleness, which has to be met before anything can be built on it. Third, why a moving landscape is a special case that escapes that case. Fourth, which of the four benefits I originally claimed can be defended, and which one rested on a source that says the opposite of what I took it to say. What a resting brain is doing The first correction is to the word "passive". Marcus Raichle and colleagues (2001) were studying something apparently technical — how much oxygen brain tissue extracts from blood during a task compared with a quiet baseline — and noticed a pattern that had been treated as an artefact. A particular set of regions, chiefly the posterior cingulate cortex and adjacent precuneus at the back of the midline and the medial prefrontal cortex at the front, reliably decreased their activity whenever a subject was given a demanding external task, and returned to a high level whenever the subject was left alone. Since these decreases occurred relative to a resting condition rather than an active one, the natural reading was that the resting condition is not an absence of activity but a mode of it. They called it the default mode of brain function, and the regions concerned have since been called the default mode network. Two things follow that matter for the passenger at the window. The first is that a mind unoccupied by an external task is not idling in the sense a stationary engine idles; it is running a different programme, and the metabolic cost of that programme is comparable to the cost of the tasks it is displaced by. The second is that the programme has content. The default mode network's activity is associated with autobiographical recall, thinking about other people's minds, and projecting oneself into imagined future situations — which is to say, with exactly the reflective work the original essay attributed to the window-gazer. So far the essay's intuition is vindicated. The trouble begins when one asks whether the passenger enjoys it. The case against stillness, which has to be met first Two findings stand directly in the way of the claim I originally made, and it would be dishonest to build on stillness without confronting them. Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert (2010) built an experience-sampling application — a program that contacts participants at random moments and asks what they are doing, whether they are thinking about something other than what they are doing, and how they feel — and ran it with roughly 2,250 adults. Their headline number is that minds wander about 47 per cent of the time, in every activity sampled. Their substantive result is the one that bites: people reported being less happy when their minds were wandering than when they were not, and this held whether the wandering was towards pleasant, neutral or unpleasant topics, and irrespective of which activity it interrupted. Because the sampling was repeated over time, they could compare each person's mind-wandering at one moment with their mood at the next and vice versa, and the temporal ordering favoured mind-wandering as the cause of the lower mood rather than its consequence. Their title states the finding without ornament: a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. Timothy Wilson and colleagues (2014) approached the same territory by simply asking people to sit alone in an unadorned room and think for between six and fifteen minutes, with nothing to do. Across eleven studies participants found this markedly unenjoyable and reported difficulty concentrating, and many preferred almost any alternative. In the study that made the paper famous, participants were first given a mild electric shock and asked whether they would pay a small sum to avoid receiving it again; then those who said yes were left alone to think, with the shock device available. Sixty-seven per cent of the men and twenty-five per cent of the women shocked themselves at least once during the fifteen minutes, having just paid to avoid the identical stimulus. That is a peculiar and robust result, and any essay recommending quiet contemplation has to account for it. So the choice is not between a busy modern life and a restorative empty one. Emptiness, delivered plain, is aversive. That settles the hard case against the naive version of the thesis; what rescues the passenger is that a train window is not emptiness at all, and the difference has a name. Soft fascination: why the window is not a blank wall Stephen Kaplan (1995) set out a framework, since called attention restoration theory, that begins from a distinction between two ways of paying attention. Directed attention is the effortful, voluntary kind: it requires inhibiting distraction, it is what an office task or a difficult conversation consumes, and it fatigues — after enough of it, performance on any task requiring it degrades.
