The unit Three workers, two power looms, one hand loom; product: cotton dupattas and shawls. Quarter output: 1,840 pieces. Largest order: 400 dupattas for a Ludhiana shop, due 20 March. 2. The yarn lesson In January the unit switched to a cheaper yarn to save 8 rupees a kilo. It broke about twenty times a day on each loom. Every break stops the loom for about five minutes, so each loom lost over an hour and a half of weaving daily. In February the unit returned to the dearer yarn: five breaks a day. The dearer yarn is the cheaper choice - the saving per kilo was smaller than the cloth lost at a standing loom. 3. Power Power cuts stopped the power looms on 41 days, usually around midday. The hand loom keeps working, but it makes in a morning what a power loom makes in an hour. The Ludhiana order left two days late. 4. Requests An inverter, to run the looms through a two-hour cut. A list of yarn suppliers with quality grades, so the next test is not run on a paying order. A finishing trainee: thread-cutting and checking is one person's work, about 60 pieces a day.
