Chand Baori, the Well with 3,500 Steps — Epoche A1
Dear Priya, Today my bus from Jaipur stopped at Abhaneri village. Everybody goes to see the well, so I went too. Chand Baori is a great square hole, thirteen floors deep, with about 3,500 small steps down its sides. It is more than a thousand years old. Why steps? Rain comes only in the monsoon months. The well keeps that water deep in the ground, and the water goes down and down through the dry year. The steps let people follow it. The air was hot at the top, but they say it stays cool down by the water. I want to see the monsoon fill it one day. Maya
