Four Words for Uncle — Epoche A1
Hello friends! In English class today I said "my uncle". The teacher asked, "Which uncle?" In Chinese that is a good question. Chinese has no word for "uncle". It has four. Who Chinese Father's older brother bófù Father's younger brother shūshu Mother's brother jiùjiu Father's sister's husband gūfù So the word tells you two things: which side of the family, and older or younger. Cousins work the same way. The word starts with táng for father's brother's children and biǎo for mother's. Nobody says "uncle" and waits.
