Pfand: Why the Bottle Costs More in Germany — Epoche A1
Bottles in Germany: three questions Why is the water more at the till? The bottle carries a Pfand — extra money. For a can or a plastic bottle: 25 cents. For a glass beer bottle: 8 cents. The shop gives this money back later, for the empty bottle. How does the money come back? Take the empty bottles back to the supermarket. The machine there takes them one by one and prints a small paper. Show the paper at the till: the money comes off the shopping. Every bottle? No. A wine bottle has no Pfand. It goes in the big glass bank on the street corner.
