In Zimbabwe, Thank You Is a Clap — Epoche A1
In Zimbabwe you can say thank you without a word: you clap your hands. How to do it Stop, and put your bag down. Two free hands, please. Men: hold your hands flat, fingers together. The sound is high and sharp. Women: make your hands like two small cups. The sound is low and soft. Clap two or three times, slowly. When to do it When somebody gives you something. When you greet an old person. When you hear good news. Here, clapping is not for the end of a show. It is for the middle of an ordinary day. Hands can talk.
