Dear Layla, On Friday I bought a small carpet in the Bazar-e Bozorg in Isfahan. The seller gave me tea — and then a lesson. He turned the carpet over. “Look at the back,” he said. On a handmade carpet you see the pattern on the back too: every flower, small and clear. On a machine carpet the back is not clear. Then he held the fringe. On a handmade carpet those white threads are not added at the end — they are the carpet's own threads, coming out. A machine sews its fringe on. Now I turn over every carpet first. Amir
