A Greeting in Dakar Takes Four Questions — Epoche A1
Friday, 12 April In Dakar, greeting a neighbour is not one question but many, and today I walked to the shop and greeted three people. Every time, the same list: How are you? How is the family? How is the house? Did you sleep in peace? The answer is always "peace only", even on a bad day. My grandmother says the greeting is not for your news; it is for the other person. Today was a bad day. I said "peace only" three times. By the shop, it was a little more true.
