The Fuse Inside the British Plug — Epoche B1
The lamp that was not broken My desk lamp died on a Sunday evening: click, click, nothing. It was old when I bought it, so I stood it by the door to go out with the recycling. On Monday my landlord came to read the meter, saw it there, and turned the plug over in his hand. Had I checked the fuse? Not the fuse box in the hall — a fuse inside the plug itself. British plugs open. One screw in the base, and there between the three pins sits a ceramic tube the size of a fingernail, printed with its rating: 3A. Mine had blown. He took the same tube from a dead radio's plug, pressed it in, and the lamp lit at once. Repair time, four minutes; cost, nothing. The interesting part is why the fuse is there at all, when the flat already has its row of circuit breakers. The answer is in the walls. British sockets are usually wired in a ring: one loop of cable leaves the fuse box, visits every socket in turn, and comes back. The loop is protected at about thirty amps — far more current than a lamp's thin cord can safely carry. If a fault pulled twenty amps through that cord, the breaker in the hall would see nothing wrong while the cord overheated. So the protection travels with the appliance instead: three amps for a lamp, thirteen for a kettle, each plug guarding its own cable. The ring itself dates from the 1940s, when copper was short and one loop used less of it than separate lines to every socket.
