The Middle Berth Is the Back of the Seat — Epoche A1
Last week I took the night train to Madurai. My ticket said "middle berth". I saw only a long seat, and one bed high up. At ten o'clock the man beside me said, "Time to sleep." He lifted the back of the seat and locked its two chains. The seat back was now a bed in the air. Under it, the seat was a bed too. Three beds now. Sitting was finished. At six the middle bed went down again. On Indian trains it lives from ten at night to six in the morning. In the day it is the back of the seat, so three people can sit.
