MEMO To: All learner drivers, car licence From: Office, Fahrschule Nord, Münster Date: 20 June Subject: Night drives — why your licence finishes in autumn Several pupils asked this month why they cannot take the practical test before September. Here is the reason. German law requires twelve special drives from every learner before the test: five on country roads, four on the motorway, and three at dusk or in the dark. The first nine fit easily into a summer timetable. The three dark ones do not. This week the sun in Münster sets just before ten in the evening, and the sky stays light until nearly eleven. A dark drive in June can therefore only begin at about eleven and end after midnight. For pupils with school or work the next morning this is a bad plan, and the school does not offer it. From late October it is dark before six in the evening. A night drive then fits into a normal evening, for example 18:00 to 20:15. Plan for spring starters: theory test and day drives now, in June and July. The three dark drives follow in October and November, and the practical test comes directly after the last one.
