Five in the Morning: The Flowers Arrive — Epoche A1
Tuesday I sell flowers in the market in Oaxaca, and my day starts before the sun. Five o'clock: the truck comes with roses and marigolds. We carry the boxes in the dark. Six: buckets, water, and the flowers open a little. Before seven: my first customer, a woman who buys white lilies for a church. Nine: the best hour. Everybody wants flowers, and my hands are wet and cold. Two: the market goes quiet. I eat, and then I sleep on my chair. People think shops open at nine. Mine was already tired by then.
