One Ticket for Every Local Train in Germany, and the Bill That Follows — Epoche B1
The Deutschlandticket is a single monthly subscription that carries you on every local and regional bus, tram and train in Germany — a Munich underground line, a Saxon village bus, a regional train across three states — and stops only at the fast long-distance services. It grew out of the nine-euro ticket of the summer of 2022, an experiment that was meant to soften fuel prices and instead revealed something else. What it fixed is easy to underestimate. Germany's fares had been a patchwork of regional transport associations, each with its own zones, and a journey that crossed two of them was a small research task. The ticket deleted the maze. You stopped calculating and started travelling, and millions of people subscribed — roughly thirteen million as of this writing. For commuters near a border between two associations, it was the single largest simplification in decades. What it strains is equally real. Federal and state governments each contribute a fixed sum every year, and every year they argue about who covers the difference, while regional operators carry the risk of a fare they did not set. The price has already climbed twice since the launch, from forty-nine euros to around sixty as of this writing, which tells you the arithmetic was never settled. And in a village where the bus comes twice a day, a cheap ticket buys you a cheap seat on a bus that still comes twice a day. So the honest question is not whether the ticket is popular. It is what the same billions should buy: cheap simplicity, or funded capacity. The nine-euro summer proved that demand exists. It did not prove that anyone had arranged the supply — and a ticket, however elegant, cannot drive itself. References Deutscher Bundestag (2023).
