A Life Written in a Booklet: Brazil's Carteira de Trabalho — Epoche B1
The carteira de trabalho is a small booklet, about the size of a passport, in which every formal job in Brazil is written down by the employer: the date you started, the wage agreed, the date you left. A career does not accumulate as memories here. It accumulates as pages. The first entry is usually made in a shop or a workshop, when the holder is eighteen and slightly nervous. The manager writes the date, the job title and the salary, signs, and returns the booklet. That signature is the whole point. From it follow the guarantee fund, into which the employer must pay a share of the wage every month; unemployment insurance if the job ends without cause; paid holiday with an extra payment on top; and the thirteenth salary, an additional month's pay at the end of the year. Later pages are less tidy. A job ends and the departure date is written in; the booklet then travels to a government office, where it is the proof that a claim is honest. Another employer signs the next page. Twenty years pass in six lines. What the pages also record is who is missing. A large share of Brazilians — commonly estimated at around four in ten workers — earn without a signed carteira: the street seller, the builder paid in cash, the driver with an app. They may work harder than anyone in the booklet, but their years leave no legal trace, and at retirement they must reconstruct a life from receipts and witnesses. Since 2019 the booklet has moved onto a phone, linked to the taxpayer number, with entries appearing by themselves. The paper is disappearing.
