The Book Was Free, but the Writer Was Paid — Epoche A1
Dear Tom, I have a library card now. It was free. The library is the big one on Calverley Street in Leeds. Three books for my English class are in the bag. The woman at the desk told me something new. Every time somebody borrows a book here, the writer gets a few pence. The money comes from the government, not from the library and not from the reader. Writers must put their names on a list first. So the book cost nothing, and the writer was paid — because I took it home. Write soon, Maria
