Changing Planes in China: When You May Leave the Airport Without a Visa — Epoche B1
A traveller changing planes in China may often leave the airport and enter the country without a visa at all, under the transit exemption scheme. It has grown steadily: first a day, then three days, then six, and as of this writing up to ten days through a long list of ports for several dozen nationalities. Check the current rules before you fly, because they change. Who can use it? Passport holders of the listed countries, arriving at and leaving from an approved port. Not everyone is on the list, and the list has been extended more than once. How is the time counted? Not from the moment you land. The count generally begins at midnight following the day of your arrival, which quietly gives you the rest of the arrival day for free. Confirm this at the counter rather than assuming it. What must my ticket show? A confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region — somewhere that is neither China nor the place you flew in from. This is the heart of the scheme: you are being admitted as a person passing through, not as a visitor. Can I travel anywhere in China? No. The permit confines you to a stated area: a city, a province, or a group of connected provinces. Leaving that area is a breach, and you must depart through an approved port. What if I get it wrong? An airline will usually stop you at check-in. If not, the border will. The scheme is worth understanding as a piece of design. A country famous for careful entry control has found a door it can open widely without opening it wrongly — the onward ticket does the work that a visa interview used to do.
