The First-Foot Brings Coal and Bread — Epoche A1
Dear Gran, Happy New Year from Kirkcaldy! Cold, wet, and very loud. Nobody stays at home after midnight here. Everybody walks round to the neighbours. But you must not arrive with empty hands. You carry a piece of coal, some bread and a bottle. The coal is for their fire and the bread is for their table. They call the first person through the door the first-foot. Dark hair is lucky, so Tom went in first at every house. He is very proud of his hair now. We got home at four in the morning. Love, Sarah
