Summer Midday Break — All Trades, All Contractors From the middle of June to the middle of September, no work takes place outdoors on this site between 12:30 and 15:00. This is not a suggestion and it is not a company kindness. It is the law of the summer, and it is checked. Why Because heat is not only discomfort. On a roof or a scaffold in July the metal is too hot to touch, and a body that cannot cool itself stops working properly: first a headache and a dry mouth, then confusion, then a fall from a height that nobody pushed. Every hour on this notice was written after somebody did not come home. Your day, June to September 05:30 – 12:30 Work 12:30 – 15:00 Rest. Site closed to all outdoor tasks. 15:00 – 19:00 Work During the break Rest tents are shaded and cooled, within five minutes' walk of every work face. Cool water is free and unlimited, and so are the salt sachets that replace what you sweat. Drink before you are thirsty. Prayer and sleep are both permitted in the tents. Nobody may be sent back out. At 12:35 the safety officer walks the site and signs a sheet: scaffolds empty, roofs empty, trenches empty. If your name is on that sheet, your supervisor answers for it, not you.
