Why the Digital Detox Is the Wrong Prescription The digital detox has become the wellness industry's favourite gesture: a weekend without a phone, a hotel that locks your handset in a box at reception, a January of deleted apps. It is a satisfying idea because it is a clean one. It is also, on the evidence, close to useless as a way of working better — and its uselessness is the interesting part, because it tells you where the real problem is sitting. The strongest case for it, and what that study actually measured Start with the strongest case, which is genuinely strong. In 2017 Adrian Ward and colleagues at the University of Texas at Austin published a study called 'Brain Drain'. Participants completed tests of working memory and reasoning with their phone either on the desk, in a bag, or in another room. Every phone was silenced. Performance was worst with the phone on the desk and best with it in another room, and the effect held even among participants who reported, sincerely, that the phone had not distracted them in the slightest. The device did not have to buzz. It only had to be within reach. Two of those terms deserve unpacking, since the whole argument turns on what was on the table. Working memory is the small store of information you can hold and manipulate at once — the mental desk space you are using when you carry a total in your head while doing the next step of the sum. It was measured with an operation-span task, in which people solve simple arithmetic problems while remembering a growing string of letters; the score is how many letters survive the arithmetic. Reasoning was measured with a matrix test: a grid of shapes with one cell missing, which you complete by working out the rule governing the rows and columns. Neither test is a work task. Both are standard instruments precisely because they are narrow, and that narrowness is what makes the result interpretable — and what limits it. The design is the reason the finding carries weight. Participants were assigned to the three phone locations by the experimenters rather than choosing them, so the groups differ, on average, in nothing but where the phone was. That rules out the obvious alternative explanation, that people who leave their phones elsewhere are simply more disciplined to begin with. The reported effects were modest in size, and one laboratory result should not carry an entire prescription; but its direction is not in doubt, and the mechanism it suggests — that the capacity is consumed by not attending to the phone — is well specified. What the study cannot support That finding is routinely waved about as proof that we should get rid of the things. Read it again and it says something narrower and more awkward. The manipulation was the phone's location during the test , and the measurement was taken in the same session. So what was estimated is the cost of proximity at the moment of working, which means it is repaid the moment the proximity ends. Nothing in the design speaks to any durable change in a person: nobody was followed home, and no habit was altered. It is an argument for the phone being in the next room during the two hours you are writing. It is not an argument for a fortnight in a cabin. The rebound claim, which I have to withdraw This essay originally continued: and a fortnight in a cabin has a predictable ending — people come home, reinstall, and are back at their previous usage within days, in the way a Dry January is followed by a February. That is the standard sceptical line, it is what I believed, and the evidence does not support it. Both halves are wrong, and the honest thing is to say so and see what survives. The best-designed test of a long abstention is by Hunt Allcott and colleagues, published in 2020. They recruited around 2,700 Facebook users and paid a randomly chosen half of them to deactivate their accounts for four weeks before the 2018 United States midterm elections, verifying deactivation daily; the other half carried on. Randomisation again does the work, and the payment matters because it recruited ordinary users rather than people already trying to quit. Deactivation freed up about an hour a day, raised self-reported well-being slightly — on the order of a tenth of a standard deviation, which is a small shift, roughly the difference between someone at the fiftieth and someone at the fifty-fourth percentile of a well-being distribution — and reduced factual knowledge of the news. The finding that undoes my claim is the follow-up: weeks after the experiment ended and payment had stopped, the treated group was still using Facebook less than the control group, and more of them had the app uninstalled. The alcohol comparison fails in the same direction. Richard de Visser and colleagues followed participants in a Dry January campaign and found, six months later, self-reported reductions in how often and how much they drank, relative to before. Both studies rely partly on what people say about themselves, and neither concerns concentration at a desk. But they point one way, and it is not the way my sentence pointed. What survives is more specific and, I think, more useful. Neither study measured productivity, or attention, or the ability to write for two hours; they measured usage and mood. So a month offline may well leave you using an app less. The claim it does not support — and the claim the retreats are sold on — is that it repairs your capacity to work. And the psychological objection stands untouched: the detox flatters the person taking it. Having survived a heroic week without Instagram, you feel you have dealt with something, and the feeling of having dealt with something is the most reliable method yet discovered for not dealing with it. Where the problem actually sits The uncomfortable part is that the phone is not really the unit of the problem.
